Home Hypodermoclysis: What It Is and When It’s Recommended

This blog's articles are general and for informational purposes only. Our care is always personalised and adapted to each patient's specific characteristics, needs and health condition.

It isn’t always possible, or desirable, to hydrate someone through a vein. In older, bedridden patients, those with fragile veins, or in a palliative care context, hypodermoclysis — administering fluids (or medication) through the subcutaneous tissue, just under the skin — is a safe, effective and far more comfortable alternative, and one that can even be done at home.

What is hypodermoclysis?

It’s a hydration technique that involves inserting a thin needle under the skin, usually in the abdomen, thigh or arm, through which fluid is administered at a controlled rate. Unlike the intravenous route, it doesn’t require access to a vein, making it less invasive — and safer, with fewer associated risks — which makes it especially useful for patients with limited or hard-to-access veins.

  • Older adults struggling to maintain good fluid intake by mouth.
  • Patients for whom oral hydration isn’t possible.
  • People with mild to moderate dehydration that doesn’t warrant hospitalisation.
  • Patients with fragile veins that are difficult to access repeatedly.

How is it followed up?

The nurse first carries out an assessment to confirm hypodermoclysis is suitable for the patient’s clinical situation, then chooses the insertion site and sets the infusion rate based on the medical prescription. During infusion, the site is monitored to make sure there are no signs of irritation or poor absorption, and the set is removed safely once hydration is complete.

The advantages of doing it at home

Besides avoiding unnecessary travel — often for patients in more fragile clinical conditions — home hypodermoclysis helps maintain the person’s comfort and routine, generally with a lower risk of complications than the intravenous route. It’s a solution particularly valued in palliative care, where the patient’s dignity and comfort come first.
